IMPROVED GROUNDS

GRANTS TO SCHOOLS GISBORNE AND WAIROA H.B. EDUCATION BOARD Grants to the Gisborne Intermediate School and Wairoa District High School fer tire improvement of grounds about the institutions were approved in correspondence received from the Education Department by the Hawke's Bay Education Board at its monthly meeting in Napier yesterday. In the case of the Gisborne Intermediate, the grant will be based upon wages costs for work on the grounds; ancl at Wairoa £4l was allocated for the same purpose. The department also approved a grant for lining a temporary building for school purposes at Bartletts Camp where the school building was destroyed by fire some time ago. Kanakanaia Conveyance In connection with the proposal that the Te Karaka conveyance service be extended to the Kanakanaia School, the department advised that it had received representations that the additional service would not involve much extra consumption of petrel if the contractor eliminated his Saturday morning bread-run. The department stated that the extra mileage per week would be only seven miles, if this step were taken, and an allowance of 5s per week would be made on this account. The board received a report from the secretary that the contractor had replied t: inquiries, stating that he had cut out the Saturday run someweeks ago. He was willing to extend the service to the Kanakanaia Schol •'or an extra payment of ,4s a day, this being a lower figure than was previously quoted. The board approved this offer, which will lie submitted to the department. A letter from the Education Department urged that a maximum effort wruld be made to complete the centennial programme of planting of native trees. Refresher Course for Teachers Teachers’ refresher courses for the September-October period were discussed by the board, which approved provisionally a schedule of three-day courses for Dannevirke, Waipukurau, Hastings, Napier, Wairoa and Gisborne. i The Kaiti School Committee wrote making an emphatic protest against the reduction of its grant for incidental expenses. The letter acknowledged that the roll of the school had been reduced by the transfer of pupils to the Gisborne Intermediate, but claimed that the incidental expenses had not been reduced proportionately, this claim being supported by details of expenditure, which the committee considered could not be reduced. It suggested that the board should take over more of the maintenance costs of the grounds and buildings. The matter was referred to a committee for consideration. Other district school matters included a request from the Tokomaru Bay committee for a grant of £l7 for grassing the two sections acquired recently, and the provision of a small motor-mower to assist in the care of the grounds.
