PLEDGE TO FRANCE
SOUTH AFRICAN PREMIER COMMANDER OF FORCES (Reed. June 17, 9 a.m.) PRETORIA, June 14. The Prime Minister of South Africa, General J. C. Smuts, has sent a message to the French Government expressing admiration of and sympathy with the French people. The message says that South Africa has pledged itself at their side. General Smuts has been appointed officer commanding the Union defence forces.
