PATRIOTIC GROUP

THREE COUNCILS LINKED INVITATION TO GISBORNE PROPOSAL FAVOURED An invitation from the Hawke’s Bay, Wellington and Taranaki patriotic councils for East Coast to join in the combined effort to avoid overlapping in the provision of equipment and amenities for the central military camps, was received at yesterday afternoon’s meeting of the East Coast Provincial Patriotic Council. The proposal was considered favourably and it was decided to join the group. In a letter from the Wellington council it was explained that the expenses would be shared on a population basis. Obligations of Councils It was explained, that at a conference of the group of the three councils it had been decided that the councils should concentrate on the improvement of the equipment, provisions, and facilities at the cental military camps in the Dominion and not contribute to the amenities on the troopships, as had been done in the past. In reply to a query from Mrs. R. U. Burke, Colonel R. F. Gambrill said that the obligations of the patriotic council regarding comforts for the troops ceased to exist when they embarked for overseas. However, financial obligations did not cease with embarkation. Goods sent to troops overseas were provided in the provinces and sent to the national council, whose duty it was to dispatch the parcels from New Zealand.

Following a favourable recommendation from the finance committee, it was decided to combine with the three councils at present in the group. • There were present Mr. Chas. Matthews, chairman, Mesdames W. A. McCliskie, R. U. Burke, G. A. Nicholls, Colonel R. F. Gambrill, and Messrs. Wilfrid C. Kohn, M. J. White, Thos. Todd, I. J. Quigley, R. P. Baigent, James Chrisp, A. J. Nicol. F. R. Ball, A A Fraser, A. L. Tempest, J. H. Hall, A. G. Hicks, F. T. Robinson, E. 1,. Adams, G. Burns, and the secretary, Mr. W. M. Jenkins.
