Golf Club Tournament . . Owing to the cancellation of the holiday on Monday, part of the Poverty Bay Golf Club’s tournament that was to have been played on the King’s Birthday will be conducted this week-end and will be completed next week-end. Donation of Ham An offer to donate a ham each week to be raffled to assist m raising funds for patriotic purposes was received yesterday afternoon by the Bast Coast Provincial Patriotic Council from Messrs. Evans’ Bacon Factory. The hams would be valued at about £1 Is. A decision to conduct a raffle was deferred until further inquiries were made about the legal aspects. Margarine v. Butter Although the position was serious, stated Mr. P. J. O’Kane at a meeting of the Wairoa branch of the Farmers’ Union on Thursday, it Was amusing to find the price of butter in England falling as a result of a campaign endeavouring to prove that margarine was superior t.o butter. He urged that the position should be investigated, and the meeting agreed to bring the matter forward in the form of a remit at the inter-provincial conference in Wairoa on June 7.—Special. Delay in Fertiliser Delivery “No one can realise the detrimental ramifications of the shortage of manure in this district,’’ said Mr. P. JO'Kane at a meeting of the Wairoa branch of the New Zealand Farmers' Union on Thursday afternoon. The question was raised by Mr. T. Lee. Powdrell, who pointed out that fertiliser orders for Wairoa had been delayed three months through the railway. He said that the district could produce an increase of 10 per cent if manure were forthcoming. The chairman, Mr. T. W. G. Tomblcson. stated that thousands of head of cattle were going into the works which should nQt be going in—station cattle such as two-year-old heifers. The position was phenomenal. —Special. Drunk Labourer Fined A labourer and boilermaker, James McLean, aged 44, appeared before Mr. Myles Doyle, J.P., in the Police Court to-day and was fined 10s on a charge of having been found ejrunk yesterday afternoon in Lowe street. Constable M. C. Teece, who prosecuted, said that it was. McLean’s second offence within the past six months. The accused explained that he had not had a drink for two weeks. Yesterday afternoon he met some friends, one of whom he had not seen for 14 years. Councils Taking Over Appeals “After the close of the present effort all appeals will come through the patriotic councils and the National Patriotic Fund Board will make no further appeals,” Mr. F. R. Ball, one of the Gisborne delegates to the recent conference of the National Patriotic Council, the National Patriotic Fund Board, and Provincial Patriotic Councils, told the meeting of the East Coast Provincial Patriotic Council yesterday afternoon. Discussions at the conference concerned the best methods oi dealing with all funds, the rehabilitation of soldiers, and the collection and control of funds. The public should have no hesitation in giving to the present appeal of the Joint Council of the Order of St. John and the Red Cross Society or that of the council.
