Poor Mutlonblrd Season Reports from the south, which have been borne out by the general quality of the birds already on the Duhedin market, indicate that the muttonbird season this year has been :i very poor one. Snow on High Country Snow fell on the high country around Gisborne last night, and travellers who negotiated Wharerata Hill reported that the bitumen section was covered, motoring being very difficult, bad visibility adding to the slippery nature of the road. Snow also was reported on the hills behind Mangatu. The snow has occurred a little earlier than usual this year, but stock are reported to be in good condition, and are well prepared for cold conditions. Motions of Condolence Recent deaths were referred to at last night’s meeting of the Gisborne Borough Council. The Mayor, Mr. D. W. Coleman, M.P., mentioned the death of Mrs. E. Upton, a daughter of a former Mayor, Mr. G. Wildish, and wife of a highly-respected citizen. The widow of a former councillor, the late Mr. T. J. Jackson, had died yesterday. The late Mr. Jackson, the Mayor continued, would be remembered by older residents as the first labour member on the Gisborne Borough Council. Votes of condolence were passed to the relatives of the late Mesdames Upton and Jackson. Intermediate School Work on the boundaries and approaches of the Gisborne Intermediate School by the Gisborne Borough Council was agreed upon by the council at last night’s meeting. The reserves committee reported having conferred with representatives of the Hawke’s Bay Education Board regarding the beautification of the Victoria Domain along the frontage of the school block, and recommended that the area be planted with shelter and shade trees, application to be made for No. 13 Scheme labour to prepare the area for planting and to fill in depressions along the boundary line. It was agreed to clean up the Disraeli street entrance to the school grounds.
