MARIST'S CLOSE CALL Marist .... 16pls. H. 5.0.8 9 Only in the last minute of the game did Marist put the issue beyond doubt to defeat H. 5.0.8. by 16 points to 9 on Saturday. The winners were very fortunate, especially in the early stages, and had H. 5.0.8. shown even a semblance of finish to their movements they would have won, as they attacked and had Marist in trouble for easily threeparts of the game. Marist attacked at the start and in attempting to clear Newton kicked the ball in to Lee, who had followed up fast, the ball rebounding towards the posts to give Lee an easy try. McGrannachan missed a very easy kick. Marist were quickly on the attack again and Wrightson beat three opposing players in a dash of 20yds. to score wide out. The H. 5.0.8. winger. J, Moore, battled his way over near the corner, but lost possession. The oldt students kept up the pressure and from a melee near the line J, Short dived

over. A couple of minutes later J. Short went over again, but lost possession. After half-time Marist staged one of their occasional attacks, and Lee, Gavin, Smiler and Hoy handled faultlessly for the last-mentioned to score, and W. Smiler converted. With the scores 11—3 it looked like Marist having a comfortable victory despite H. 5.0.8. having the better of the game territorially. However, H. 5.0.8. attacked vigorously and J. Moore scored in the corner. He again battled his way to the Marist line a few minutes later and sent Corstorphine over near the posts. Gardiner, by missing an easy kick, failed to even the scores. H. 5.0.8. kept up the attack, but offside play by Gardiner frequently cost them valuable ground. With less than a minute to go, Hoy broke away with Henry in support and sent the ball infield to the latte: for a try. Wrightson goaled from the sideline with a fine kick. Mr. H. Hunter was the referee. -
