TALKS OPENED

N.Z. PARTY LEADERS JOLT FOR CABINET MINISTERIAL VACANCY DR. MCMILLAN FAVOURED (Sj)Rciai to the Herald.) WELLINGTON, this day. The Labour Party caucus was continued this morning, but the most significant point in to-day’s position is that conversations which took place between the Prime Minister, the Hon. P. Fraser, the Leader of the Opposition, the Hon. A. Hamilton, and the Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates, are likely to be renewed during the day. Keen as many sections of the public are for a National Government, there is nothing in the developments up to the present moment to suggest that it is of imminence. Cabinet Ministers are reported to have received what one Labour member calls a jolt when Dr. D. G. McMillan’s nomination for the Ministerial vacancy was so thoroughly backed in caucus against four other candidates, Messrs. J. O’Brien, F. W. Schramm, J. G. Barclay, and J. Thorn. The favoured candidate is definitely a Leftist — an indication to the Prime Minister that his existing team needs an overhaul.
