COOK COUNTY RISE £4721 LESS FOR WORKS GENERAL INCREASE £4798 BUDGET TOTALS £119,823 ROADING COST £86,098 A rale of 5d in the £ on the unimproved value was agreed to by the Cook County Council to-day, this being an increase of id in the £ on last year's rate. It is proposed to raise £44,705 from rates, an increase of £77 from £44,P28 last year. The amount required lor works was set at £27,029, a decrease of £4721. which was offset by an increase of £4798 in the general account expenditure planned, this being set at £17,070.

In all, the council budgets lor an expenditure of £119,823, of which £33,725 is for expenditure on general purposes and £86,098 on works, these amounts including a credit balance in the general account of £6525 and £50,094 in anticipated grants from the Main Highways Board, the Public Works Department and employment promotion fund. It was explained that the hospital levy of £9372 was £433 less than last •year. Interest payments increased slightly, on the estimates, owing to the raising of the balance of 10 per cent of the loan and workmen’s cottage loan repayment of £172.
