HURDLES PROSPECT JEWELLED GIRDLE THE pOZER INJURED CONNECTIONS UNLUCKY By “Trenton” Jewelled Girdle’s double win at Te Rapa has greatly enhanced his Great Northern Hurdles prospects and has also earned him a rise of 141 b., making his impost 10.2. However, he is a stayer above the average and can handle heavy gping, so even with his rise in weight his chances appear bright. An aged gelding by Kilbroney from Loloma, by Monal'orm from Seabird, Jewelled Girdle has only raced five times this season. After contesting the Jumpers’ Flat race at Riccarton, at the National meeting last August, he was off the scene until he appeared in the Avondale Hurdles in April, when he ran a creditable fourth. At Whangarei he was unplaced in the Autumn Handicap, while at his last start prior to the Waikato meeting he ran second to The Dozer in the Papakura Hurdles, at Pukekohe. For these efforts he has earned £675 in stakes. Eye Trouble Again L. J. Ellis has had a recurrence of eye trouble and will have to take another holiday. It is unlikely that lie will be able to ride again for at least two months. Old Rivals Mr. K. Duncan and Mr. H. Dods, the local horseman, have fought out many duels in gentlemen riders’ races, and their mounts, Tolaga and Gaine’s Choice, finished in that order in the Waikato Plate on Monday.

Improvement Needed Enjoyment made his debut as a steeplechaser in the Waikato Steeples, but he failed to complete the course and will have to show marked improvement during the next week or so to be even considered for the big Ellerslie event. By Local Sire Tolaga, the winner of the gentlemen riders' race at Te Rapa on Monday, is' a six-year-old gelding by Master Colossus from Nightwatch, and hails from the successful Knapp stable at Awapuni. He has a reputation of being a splendid jumper and may be worth watching for future events. In: the Waikato Plate he was having his third start of the season. Master Colossus, who is locally owned, also was the sire of Reay Bridge. To Miss the Northern

Owing to striking himself while working at Takanini earlier in the week, The Dozer has been eased up, and it is probable that he will not be 'seen out at the Great Northern meeting. This is decidedly unfortunate for his connections, as the Valette gelding looked certain to pay his way in hurdle races at the meeting.

The Dozer commenced his education as a hurdler only a couple of months ago, but he showed fine aptitude in this department, and when making his debut i,n the Papakura Hack and Hunters’ 'Hurdles realised expectations by winning handsomely. Northern critics were very much ’inpressed with the display, and he was given more ..than an outside chance* of Success in .the 1 big hurdles at Ellerslie next month.' Sydney Trainer G. Price, the Sydney trainer, arrived'in Auckland on Monday on a short visit to the Dominion. Auckland JRehandicaps The folio, wing re, handicaps for the Auckland Racing Club’s winter meeting have been declared by Mr. F. J. McManemiri:— Great Northern Hurdles: Jewelled Girdle, 141 b., making 10.2. Great Northern Steeplechase; Baldric, 101 b, making 9.10. Cornwall Handicap: Namara, 61b., making 8.11. Bridegroom, who won at Awapuni last Saturday, and All Irish, winner of the Waikato S'eeplechase at Te Rapa on Monday, will not be rehandicapped for the Great Northern Steeplechase. Taken To Ellerslie Flashlight was not considered by his trainer, G. Ridgway, to be well enough at the Waikato meeting to be produced. He did not make as speedy a recovery from his mishap at Wanganui as expected, but Ridgway now considers that he will be right again for the Auckland meeting. Both Streamline and Flashlight werg taken to Ellerslie on Tuesday. Death of Drama A Hawke’s Bay report discloses the death from an accident of the brood mare Drama (Thespian—Drax). Bred by Mr. G. M. Currie, Drama was later at the Wes 4 mere stud and was purchased at that dispersal sale by Mr. W. R. Stead, Hastings. Mr. Stead secured the top price of the yearling sales. 1150gns., with Drama’s filly foal by .Beau Pere, now racing as Mills)- 5

ment. fie had recently sold Drama to Mrs. Edmunds, of Wellington, and it was while running out on Mi's. Edmund’s property that she met with the accident. Performances of Namaya Early in his career Narnara earned a reputation for consistency that he has maintained through three seasons of racing, and this season especially he has been unlucky in several close finishes' As a two-year-old he faced the starter eight times, and was four times second and once third. In 16 starts as a three-year-old ho had five successes, and at the latter end of the term he was tackling cup company. This season Narnara did not strike form immediately, but in 20 races to date he has won three, has been six times second, and once third. On four occasions he was beaten by a head or less, and his excellent effort on Saturday was a good augury for his future in good handicap class. He has started 44 times for eight firsts, 10 seconds' and three thirds. Narnara is by "Lackhafn from Tickaday, by Day ‘Comet, from the Demosthenes mare Tikima, the dam also of Dungarvan.
