MRS. L. J. PENFOLD DIES 73 YEARS IN GISBORNE FLED FROM MASSACRE A link with the early days of Gisborne was severed last night with the death of Mrs. Louisa Jane Penfold, aged 79. at the Cook Hospital. At the time of the Te Kooti massacre Mrs. Penfold a'nd the other members of her family were transferred temporarily to Napier. The deceased was born in Auckland and came to Gisborne with her parents at the age of four. Her father was a sergeant in the army at the time of Te Kooti. At the age of 2U Mrs. Penfold was married to the late Mr. Albert Penfold, who predeceased her by four years. She had enjoyed splendid health until six months ago, when, following an illness, she failed to recover her normal strength. Mrs. Penfold left no family, but the sympathy of her friends will be extended to two brothers. Mr. T. Byrne. Gisborne, and Mr. R. Byrne, Hastings, and one sister, Mrs. T. Finucane, Gisborne. Requiem mass will be celebrated in St. Mary’s Church, Lowe street, at 9 a.m. to-morrow, after which the funeral will leave for the Taruheru cemetery. MR. JAMES DALRYMPLE FORMER BUSINESSMAN Remembered by many of the older residents of Gisborne as the proprietor of an ironmongery business, Mr. James Dalrymple, died this morning in Gisborne, aged 71. Mr. Dalrymple was born in Whitehaven, England, and at the age of 17 he set out from the Mother Country on what was to be an interesting career. For seven years he was in charge of a vineyard store at Malta. At the age of 25 he decided to travel to New Zealand and came to Gisborne and established himself in an ironmongery business. He sold out his interest in that firm 13 years later and went on the land. After farming in the Bay of Plenty for four years Mr. Dalrymple returned to Gisborne and bought a property at The Willows. He was married* in Gisborne to Miss Ada Rose Porter, a daughter of LieutenantColonel Porter; his .wife died in 1935. Mr. Dalrymple was a lover of horses and showed a keen interest in racing, as well as in other forms of sport. The sympathy of many friends will be extended to his two sons and four daughters. His eldest daughter, Mrs. A. J. McGregor, Gisborne, also predeceased him. The surviving members of the family are Mr. Hugh Dalrymple. Oootiki, Mr. James Dalrymple. Gisborne, and Mesdames Athol White, Fred Galloway, and Roy Stewart, and Miss Jean Dalrymple, all of Gisborne. There are 19 grandchildren. The interment will be a private one, leaving his. late residence, Upper Fox street, at 11 a.m. to-morrow for the Taruheru cemetery.
