Financing the War
Sir, —After reading of the wonderful response to the Hon. Mr. Nash’s appeal for funds to help in this great struggle for freedom, one cannot but leel proud of those who have given so generously. Do we fully realise what the Empire is fighting? Are we doing enough? Personalfy, Ido not think we are. Those of us who are too old to go overseas must do our utmost here. The Allies are fighting for their very life. New Zealand is doing her part in men, both army and navy. We must give more, and give again.
We know what to expect should the Germans go on to victory. Most of us have not forgotten 1914-18, and Poland is fresh in our memories. We also known the Germans’ lust for power through bloodshed. The workers of Sweden gave one day’s pay to help Finland in their great fight against Russia. Let us, then, as workers, give one day’s pay towards the cost of the war. Surely our freedom is worth more. VICTORY FIRST.
