NEW ENROLMENTS

1400 MARK PASSED GISBORNE-COAST LIST THIRD ECHELON MEN QUOTA BEYOND QUESTION Despite the heavy drain already made upon the district man-power, voluntary recruiting in the GisborneEast Coast area continues to bring forward large numbers of men for the Special New Zealand Force, the Maori Battalion, and home defence units. By far the greater proportion of the enlistments is for active service, and a feature of the home defence enrolments is the percentage of men who served in the Great War and are anxious to give their services once again.

Many of these men hope, by good service on the home front, to qualify for places in the later echelons of the special force abroad. Others, who are beyond the age of active service, are content with the prospect of doing their bit where their remaining military value can best be made use of. Not many of the ex-servicemen have yet given up entirely the hope of doing another stroke for their country, however, and their spirit undoubtedly is communicating itself to the younger men in the community. There should be no difficulty in raising the Third Echelon quota in Gisborne, judging by the number of young and apparently fit men whose names figure in the lists of enrolments. Similarly, the Maori recruiting is still undiminished in volume, and subsequent calls for native troops should not find this district wanting. Up to date, enlistments for all three main sections of the military—special New Zealand force, Maori Battalion, and home defence —have exceeded 1400 for the Gisborne-East Coast area.
