THE WESTERN FRONT

ACTIVITY NEAR VOSGES NEW CYPRIOT UNIT GORTS THREE HORSES (Reed. Jan. 11, 11.30 a.m.) LONDON, Jan. 10. A war communique issued in Paris this morning states that local activity of contact elements was experienced on the Western Front, in the region west of the Vosges. To-day’s despatches from France announce the arrival there of the first colonial troops, these being Cypriot transport units. A Cypriot contingent was enlisted in the early days of the war and their departure from the colony two months ago was accompanied by scenes of great enthusiasm. The last two months have been spent in intensive training. It is believed that this is the first occasion that Cypriot and British troops have been associated. The Paris paper Le Jour says that on the Western Front the British Expeditionary Force possesses only three hordes. All are for the use of the Commander-in-Chief, Viscount Gort.
