ESCAPE OF LINER
THREE SUBMARINES ATTACK NEAR CANARIES ONE RAIDER SUNK CONVOY IN ACTION (Reed. Jan. 8, 10.30 a.m.) NEW YORK, Jan. 10. A message from Rio de Janeiro quotes a report by the Brazilian newspaper Anoite stating that the passengers by the Blue Star Line vessel Avila Star, of 12,872 tons, claim that their ship was attacked by three submarines near the Canary Islands in the vicinity of the attack made on the Highland Patriot. The convoy sank one submarine. It is believed that there is a secret German base near the Canary Islands.
