SOCIAL WELFARE
SYLLABUS FOR NURSES TRAINING AS ALMONERS Recognition of the importance of social work in the care of hospital patients is implied in a decision'of the Department of Health to include a subject dealing with almoner work in the post-graduate course for nurses, which will begin this year on February 23 and continue until September
Since the inception of the scheme, 11J months ago, the post-graduate syllabus of instruction has covered only two subjects, one being concerned with public health nursing and the other dealing with hospital administration and teaching in schools of nursing. Students who now take social work as their subject will be prepared particularly for almoner or hospital social work, though arrangements can be made to provide training also for other branches of similar welfare activities.
It is stated that the new course will aim at giving a background of most of the subjects taught in past years, but special instruction is to be provided in the history and. economics of social welfare in social case work and in social work in general. Observation and practical experience will be designed to afford an insight into methods of dealing with social problems connected with hospital •patients.
