RUNNING REPAIRS

MOTORISTS’ EXAMS LADY DRIVERS STUDY THREE SCORE MAXIMUM If you had a flat tyre and had lost your spare, what would you do? Is it a fair question?

Whatever your answer to the latter query may be, you would be called upon to answer something like the first part correctly, among about two dozen other pertinent and searching inquiries, if you took the examination recently faced in Gisborne by a large number of women car-drivers. Moreover, you would not have much room for error, if you wished to equal the examination scores of the best of the class. Three of the examinees gained full marks, and others were close up. The test was undertaken at the Gisborne High School, following a course of instruction for a class of women drivers organised by Mr. E. W. McKenzie, of Ormonds’ Motors, Limited. The student drivers were called upon to attend classes twice weekly, the drudgery being lightened considerably by the employment of movie instructional films at one gathering each week

Under test, on a paper which covered a great deal of general knowledge of a motor car’s operating principles and the best way to overcome temporary difficulties, the students were allowed lapses aggregating 35 marks, and of 37 examinees all but six scored well enough to pass the test. Successful Examinees Those who passed were Misses H. Veitch, 99 points; C. Blackburn, 115 points; M. Foster, 106 points; I. Somervell, 111 points; R. Hunter, 104 points; P. Barker, 115 points; P. Burke, 114 points; P. Crawford, 82 points; M. Hamilton, 110 points; N. Reynolds, 80 points; R. Wauchop, 103 points; N. Flayes, 104 points; D. Bagnall, 111 points; L. Lunn, 107 points; I. Campbell, 110 points; D. Flavell, 86 points; P. Burnett, 92 points; A. Newton, 84 points; M. Sherratt, 114 points; D. Barton, 105 points; J. Irvine, 111 points; E. Hegarty, 110 points: L. Godfrey, 97 points; E. Parkes, 87 points; A. Neenan, 110 points; J. Black, 110 points; M. Curtis, 108 points; M. Blair, 110 points; B. Dobson, 84 points; M. Barker, 115 points; D. McDiarmid, 110 points. A small group of the students hope to proceed to Great Britain to offer their services in one of the women’s war-time organisations, but the majority are content to know sufficient of the insides of their cars to permit of running repairs. The next stage in their instruction will cover the more intricate phases of motor construction. Further classes for beginners will be commenced by Mr. McKenzie later, the first of these beginning in February.

a few weeks are known to be holding back for the moment The possibility that, once attested, they may be ordered into camp at a few days’ notice, is a deterrent in these cases, tho'Wn in others it is a decided incentive.
