THE WEATHER Last Night's Forecast General situation: Pressure is still high in the north, but has fallen, considerably in the south, and the situation has become one of the westerly type. Forecast: Winds between north-west and south-west, moderate in force in the far north, elsewhere fresh to strong and • reaching gale force at times in exposed positions. Seas in New Zealand waters, rough about Cook and Foveaux Straits, moderate but rising south of Cape Egmont, elsewhere slight or moderate. Eastern Tasman Sea: Winds from a westerly quarter, moderate in the northern portion with slight seas, and strong to gale force in the southern portion with rough seas. Weather, cloudy and unsettled in the western and southern areas of the South Island, with occasional rain, elsewhere mainly fair to cloudy. Temperatures, mild in the south and warm elsewhere. To-day’s North Island Report Winds from a north-westerly quarter were general throughout the North Island this morning, and blue skies with detached clouds were reported from all points between Auckland and Wellington, conditions being overcast in the cities. The barometer had a rising tendency. For the second day in succession the temperature at Gisborne was 73 degrees at 9 a.m., and this morning that recording was the highest in the North Island. Other temperatures were. —Napier and Tauranga, 72 degrees; East Cape, 71; Opotiki, 69; Auckland, 67; Wellington, 66) Seas were smooth to slight north of Gisborne and moderate to rough south of Napier.
