BOWLING PAIRS

SECTION PLAY I DOMINION TOURNEY SIXTY-SEVEN QUALIFY GISBORNE SI ICC ESSES (X’er Press Association.) WELLINGTON, this day. Interesting play was witnessed at the continuation yesterday of the New Zealand centennial bowling tournament when 266 players competed in the section rounds of the pairs championship. The greens were holding after an early morning shower and a strong northerly wind disturbed tire competitors, but conditions improved later in the day. A notable defeat was that of W. J. Robinson, of the Hamilton club, who won the title in Auckland last year. In the second of four games of 21 heads he was beaten bv the slightly superior play of Hawkins (Frankton Junction), the score being 22 to 19. Robinson again lost, this time by 15 to 12, to Gray, of Kelburn, in the linn] round of yesterday's play. Other previous holders of the championship pairs who were eliminated were Lowry (Pctone), whom Dyett (Karori) vanquished by the convincing margin of 21 lo 9; Edwards (Temuka), who went down in the first game to White (Feilding), 25 to 10; Brackenbridge (Newton), who in yesterday’s event was leading from Reid of Lyall Bay, Jenkin (Carlton) and Mnslin (Hawera). who was the lead for Squire when they won the title in Wellington in 1933. Other well-known players who failed to qualify were the veteran Taieri Bowler, Carswell, whose sterling performances in the singles event attracted so much interest and Deare (Carlton), who is the only two-lifer remaining in the singles championship. Spearman, who is the only former singles champion left in that event, went right through in yesterday’s pairs games. Wilson (Linwood), the winner of ihe rinks in 1934 and 1938 at Dunedin. won. all four games. He had a 19-point win in the first game against Hazelwood (Lyall Bay) and registered comfortable margins in the remaining three rounds. Haworth (Canterbury), who won the pairs 'and rinks at Christchurch in ,1936' —the only time this double victory has been achieved in the same year although the Auckland player Franks (Balmoral) last year won both the singles and rinks at Auckland—is still going with three wins to his credit.

In all ti 7 players qualified yesterday, there being many ties of both four and three wins and particularly the latter number.
