HUGE SHIPS OF WAR
AMERICAN DOUBTS CRAFT OF 80,000 TONS (Reed. Jan. 10, 3 p.m.) WASHINGTON, this day.
Giving evidence before the House Naval Affairs Committee, the chief of naval operations, Admiral Stark gave the opinion that the suggested 80,000 ton warships were either too big or insufficiently big, but he did not explain what he meant thereby.
He said that the navy was investigating the possibilities of building ships ,of 52,000 tons armed with 18in. guns. He expressed satisfaction in referring to the plans for four 49,000 ion ships with a speed of 33 knots, giving the opinion that they probably were the best being built for any nation.
