KICKED IN BAR DOOR
INCIDENT IN RUATORIA MAORI CAUSES DAMAGE When the bar was being cleared at 5.50 p.m. last Saturday at the Manul.nhi Hotel, Runtoria, a 28-year-old Maori, John Hauraki, kicked out a glass panel in the bar-room door and caused damage to the extent of £1 19s. The incident resulted in the appearance, on Monday of Hauraki before Messrs. W. H. 6. Johnston and T. A. Sneiling, J.P.'s in the Runtoria Police Court, and on a charge of causing wilful damage, the accused was convicted and fined £2 and ordered to make restitution of the cost of a new glass panel. The prosecution was conducted by Constable J. W. Birch, who explained that the incident occurred when the barman was attempting to shepherd some of the Maoris out of the bar just before it would be necessay to close down for the day. When arrested Hauraki admitted the offence.
