NOTED CLUB PILOT
INJURED AIRMAN ESCAPE FROM FIRE (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, this day. Flying Officer R. F. Smillie, who, with Aircraftsman D. C. Lyons, of Timaru, suffered injuries yesterday when the Vickers-Vincent bombing plane in which they were flying caught fire and was forced into a crash landing on a farm about two miles from the Woodbourne aerodrome, is the New Zealand manager of C. C. Wakefield, and Company, Limited, and is a member of the Wellington (Territorial) Squadron which was mobilised on the outbreak of war.
He is also associated with the Wellington Aero Club and before mobilisation was one of the club’s most active and popular flying members. Two years ago he won the Bledisloe Trophy for the best all-round clubtrained pilot in New Zealand. Hs is married and resides in Seatoun. Mrs. Smillie went to Blenheim to-day.
