WOOL APPRAISAL

BIGGER CATALOGUES GISBORNE AND COAST SHIPPING DIFFICULTY SHEARING CONTINUES Although final figures are not yet available, it seems cestain that the catalogues for the next wool appraisement in Gisborne, Tolaga Bay and Tokomaru Bay, to commence on January 17, will be greatly- increased from the first one held on November 24 and two following days. The total at present in sight for the three centres is 15,000 bales, compared with 9600 bales in November, an increase of more than 50 per cent. Brokers are making final arrangements for the display of the wool and the cataloguing of the clips. Shipping is presenting a. little difficulty, aryl Gisborne stores still contain a few clips that were appraised in November. Most of the wool has been shipped, but it seems that there will be some carry-over for a further period. No Coast Wool Shipped Tokomaru Bay and Tolaga Bay are suffering most from the shipping delays, and so far none of the clips appraised in November has been shipped, making the storage position very difficult Some of the earliest shorn wool ,in New Zealand is found on the Ccast, and practically the whole of the season’s clip is in store. Arrangements have beer made, .however, for the first shipment of wool for the season' to be made shortly, in a normal season, several thousand bales are dispatched by overseas vessels from the Coast early in November.

Wool is coming in atill from the Gisborne country districts, and shearing is not yet finished. One of the stations which usually finishes up the season with Christmas shearing has just commenced operators, more than a fortnight late, and other sheds remain to be cut out. It is the most protracted season the district has known for a long time. CANTERBURY WOOL FIRST CHEQUE OF £384;605 The Canterbury wool cheque for the first appraisal -in Christchurch totalled £384,605 gross. This is equal to an average of £l6 13s 3d a bale or 13d per lb. In accordance with the practice 5 per cent of the gross proceeds are retained until the end o r the season to cover any adjustments which may' be necessary. An improvement on this average is expected from the next appraisal beginning this week, since Christchurch is the centre at which t'-e bulk- ot the Dominion’s fine” wools are offered.
