RECRUITING ISSUE
FILLING OF QUOTA MR. BARNARD’S VIEWS VOLUNTARISM DEFENDED Satisfaction with the effort of the No. 7 Military District in filling its quota for the Second Echelon has been expressed by the Hon. W. E. Barnard, M.P., who has figured as a staunch defender of the voluntary principle of recruiting for the New Zealand Expeditionary Force. “With the people of Hawke’s Bay, Poverty Bay and Wairarapa, T am proud of the fact that this military district is the first in New Zealand to make up a full quota for the Second Echelon,” said Mr. ’ Barnard, on his return to Napier from Wellington “It seems fitting that a Hawke’s Bay representative should have urged that volunteers can be recruited if an appeal is made in the right way. This district has set an example to the rest of New Zealand."
In the supplementary draft from Gisborne and the East Coast, which will help to fill the gaps in the Second Echelon drafts from other districts, and which leaves Gisborne on the morning of Tuesday, January 16. there are included 22 married men. These men all have wives dependent on them, and the number of children directly dependent totals 29.
