PAST 1200 MARK

P.B. VOLUNTEERS FLOW UNDIMINISHED EUROPEANS AND MAORIS NATIVE DRAFT EXPECTED Yesterday the total of volunteers for active service from Gisborne and the East Coast passed the 1200 mark with 729 Europeans listed and 495 Maoris. The flow of recruits has not slackened since just before Christmas, when the holidays released many men to visit town and find their way to the recruiting office. The total now reached represents a magnificent tribute to the patriotism of tire young men of the district, and there is little doubt that the figures could be improved on greatly if adequate steps were taken to reach single men and married men with one or two children who are still debating whether they will enlist now or wait on the chance of conscription being introduced. The evidence of these enlistments is conclusive as to the present capacity of the district to meet normal drafts for successive echelons without resort to compulsion. There is developing, however, a strong feeling that Gisbonie should receive full credit for the contributions it is now making to the early echelons, and that if compulsion is resorted to later the drain on man-power should be equalised by a reduction of numbers required from the district. Those enrolled as volunteers during the past two days comprise:— New Zealand Maori Battalion Horua, Jim, single, 35 years, Tolaga Bay, labourer.
