CENTENNIAL MEETING FIRST DAY’S HANDICAPS ROYAL CHIEF TOP IN CUP SULIEMAN HEADS SPRINT By “Trenton” Weights for the Wellington Racing Club's centennial summer meeting have been declared by Mr. H. Coyle. As was expected, Royal Chief heads the list in the Centennial Cup with 9.(i. At Riccarton, Royal Chief finished fourth in the New Zealand Cup and, according to good judges, he was unlucky not to win. However, the journey at Trentham is half a mile shorter and Royal Chief’s chief difficulty will be that he takes time to find his feet, although the long straight at Trentham will tend to even matters. Royal Chief’s weight of 9.6 is 31b. less than that carried by Vintage in 1935, when the Shambles gelding established a weight-carrying record for the race. All things considered, the handicapper has not been harsh with Royal Chief and he may be one of the early favourites. After Beau Vite's defeat of Beauiivre at Ellerslie, his impost was awaited with interest. His 8.7 represents 71b. above the weight-for-age scale, and he must be conceded an excellent chance. It will be recalled that Defaulter made no race of it last January, when carrying 8.11. ' Many may be of the opinion that Beau Vite could hardly be compared with Defaulter, and while he has not The- performances of the latter it must be admitted that his Ellerslie wins were very impressive and there is no doubt that he is improving. Also he has 41b. less than Defaulter carried, which is an appreciable difference, especially over a mile and a half journey.

Sly Fox, Cheval de Volee, Old Bill, Royevrus and Du Maurier are all likely to atuact attention in early calculations. Of these. Old Bill may come in for special attention, as he is a fine stayer, capable of plenty of pace with which to gain a good position early, a factor well worth considering in what promises to be a big field.
