EXCHANGES ON WEST FRONT
FIERCE GERMAN RAIDS FAIL NOT A SINGLE PRISONER TAKEN NOW DOUBTS OF EARLY BIG OFFENSIVE RISING TIDE OF INTERNAL DISSENT (Elec. Tel. Copyright—United Press Assn.) (Reed. October 13,11.50 a.m.) LONDON, October 12.
A French communique issued in Paris says that the activity oT the first line units spread during the night on many parts of the front between the Rhine and the Moselle.
The official French commentator on the Western Front says tile activity of one of the German raids was particularly fierce. It was preceded by a heavy artillery barrage, but the results were entirely in favour of the French. Not a single prisoner was taken by the enemy. Rain fell in an unceasing deluge over the Saar region for some hours. Many German Casualties
The Paris agency of the Associated Press of Great Britain says the Germans suffered many casualties in recent attacks. The French, who are well entrenched, ’nave not lost an inch of ground, while their losses in men have been slight. Mr. P. J. Philip, a Paris correspondent of the New York Times, reports that the advancing season and heavy rain of the past 10 days make it almost incredible that the Germans can launch a heavy offensive before tlie spring. Besides, he adds, it is reasoned in Paris that there must be growing pressure in Germany against a suicidal war in the west, While Russia seizes all the strategic positions and booty in the east. A communique issued in Berlin by the German High Command states that minor patrol and artillery activity, occurred on the Western Front and minor air reconnaissance activity over the North Sea and on the Western Front. A French plane was shot down south of Lauterburg in aerial combat.
