GISBORNE STUD BULL j SALE IN DANNEVIRKE j CHAMPIONSHIP AWARD (SjMH'inl to tin* Hnrald.) DANNEVIRKE, this day. The top price of 325gns. was secured at the sale of stucl Aberdeen Angus bulls in Dannevirke yesterday by a two-year-old, Delphin of Waitaria, offered and brey by Mr. G. V. Smith, Waitaria Stud, Patutahi. The buyer was Mr. P. Borthwick, Masterton. The bull won the Carlyon and Donald Grant Cup for the champion bull of all classes at the sale and also the Southern Hawke’s Bay Auctioneers' Association Challenge Cup for the best two-year-old brc-cl by exhibitor. Delphin of Waitaria was also the prize-winning yearling at the Hawke’s Bay Show last year. The judging prior to the sale was conducted 1 by Mr. H. B. Williams. Turihaua, Gisborne, who was among the buyers of some of the most highlypriced bulls. In addition to the successes achieved by Mr. Smith, the awards were as follows: Wright, Stephenson and Company, Limited, Challenge Cup, for the best group of three bulls. —Mr. A. McGafiin, Elsthorpe. Yearling bulls.—A. McGaflin. 1 and 2. Gisborne Purchase Mr. McGaffin’s prize-winning yearling Toby of Brooklands, sired by Carchage of Cwavas, realised 150gns., being purchased by Mr. H. B. Williams, Gisborne. A second yearling in Mr. McGaffin’s winning group, Tasman of Brooklands, by the same sire, was purchased by Mr A. L. Whelan, Marton, for 70gns. The second award in the 2-year class, Hero of Mangamaire, offered on account of Mr. J. E. Hewitt, was sold at 120gns., to Mr. A. W. Akern. Palmerston North.
One of the principal sales in the offering was the imported bull Jimmie Jinks, offered on account of Mr. Donald Grant, Dannevirke, which was sold at 200gns. to Mrs. T. May, Matapihi, Waipawa.
Hesitancy of Buyers
Throughout the sale some hesitancy was shown by buyers, due to the commandeer price for beef not yet being announced. However, out of the first 70 bulls offered only 12 were passed, and the average price, which included the offering of various prize-winners, was approximately 50gns. Later in the sale 150gns. was real isecl for Eris 80th of Tautane, a two-year-old by the imported Jerdin Eris, on account of Tautane Stud, Limited, the buyer being Mr. H. B. Williams. The offering aflhe sale totalled 120.
