GISBORNE ENLISTMENTS GOOD PHYSICAL STANDARD STIFF DENTAL EXAM. With instructions to examine only single men in the first place, and to apply a high physical standard in sorting out the men required for the special military force now in course of enlistment, medical boards worked last, night and throughout to-day on a list of well over 200 Gisborne district volunteers. Of last night's candidates for examination, about 50 per cent were able to meet the exacting standard fixed, and many of those who were stood down for the present were so treated because of slight dental defects. The denial examination was especially stiff, according to the men who underwent it, and if the standard of this selective process is maintained, any force sent away from New Zealand should have little trouble in dealing with the toughest of "hard tack!”

On the other hand, it is considered that some relaxation must be made, if not in connection with the first draft then for reinforcements which may be sent later; otherwise it will be difficult to keep up the flow of acceptable volunteers.

Quota Not Yet Known

The full list of those whose names and particulars had been, recorded in Gisborne in connection with the raising of the special force is given below. The quota required from this area has not been fixed, so far as is known, but with 220 men to select the best ohysical tvoes from it should not he difficult to lilt the most optimistic quota.
