WAIROA’S “BRONCO BILL” * 'CONSTABLE ASSAULTED LABOURER’S ESCAPADE (Special to the Novalil.) WAIROA, this day. When Sydney Ross, alias Rossbettcr, alias Bronco Bill, aged 48. a labourer of Tuai, came into town on Saturday and had more drink, than was good for him he landed himself in a whole heap of trouble. Among other things he assaulted a constable, and as a result of his escapade he will spend the .next three months in the Nanier gaol.

Ross was charged in the Wairoa Police Court yesterday before Messrs. J. R. Gillespie dnd .J. Corkill. -l.Ps.. with behaving in a disorderly manner while drunk and also with assaulting a police constable while in the execution of his duty.

The accused pleaded guilty to both charges, and on the first count he was convicted and discharged, while on the second charge he was convicted and sentenced to three months imprisonment. Well Known to the Police Sergeant D. Clark told the court that the accused was well known to the police. He was working at Tuai and periodically he visited town. When the accused got. drunk he was dirty, and on this occasion he made a nuisance of himself by peering 'into motor car windows and molesting women. When approached by the constable and told to desist lie deliberately staggered across the main street and held up motor cars. As soon as the constable put hands on him the accused lashed out and after a struggle he was taken handcuflcd to the police station. Sergeant Clark pointed out that it was tiie practice oi' the accused when arrested to try and land a “king hit. He was before the court on May last on a charge of resisting arrest. “He’s a nuisance and we can very welt do without him here.” concluded the sergeant. When asked by the Bench if he had anything to say, the accused stated that it was. a fortnight since he was last in town. He had a few beers and then some whiskies on top of them. He blamed the liquor and was verysorvv for what he had clone. He had not been in Ihc best oi health and had arranged to consult a doctor in Wellington on Wednesday. The accused added that if he had to “do time" he would lose his compensation and would not be able to see the doctor. Sergeant Clark: Why didn t you think of that when you got drunk ~ ,
