WELSH COB FOR WAIROA STALLION IMPORTED MR. D. STEWART’S DEAL ARRIVAL LAST WEEK A great deal of interest was created when it was learned recently that Mr, D. D. Stewart, Wairoa, had purchased in England a Welsh cob stallion, Lloyd George. On tile arrival of the steamer, many in'erested persons, including Mr. Stewart, were at the wharf to take the firstl opportunity of inspecting the ccb, which was bred by Mr. D. J. Davies, Llwynrheol, Llanarth, Cardiganshire, and imported through the stud stock department c£ the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Limited, in conjunction with their London office. A three-year-old black horse with a white star, Lloyd George stands just over 15 hands. He was a second prize-winner at the Royal Show at Cardiff last year. By Gwenog Welsh Flyer out of Oakford Black Bess, toy Ceitho Welsh Comet from _ Oakford Puss, Lloyd George was originally named Oakford Welsh Flyer, but was re-registered before leaving England. It is confidently expected that this stallion will be a notable acquisition to the Hawke’s Bay district, and Mr. Stewart deserves congratulations on his foresight in j arranging this importation, 0 Popularity in Britain j While Welsh ponies are compare- j tively unknown in New Zealand, they j have achieved some degree of popu- j larity in Britain, and to-day are bred . along the Shropshire border and all I over Wales. Good-looking animals, well developed, with good length of neck and well-laid shoulders, they are noted for their action, and generally attract much attention when exhibited. It has been said that the Welsh breed holds a certain degree of Arab ! blood, a statement that probably is based on the fact that these animals show the same colour and carry thefl tail in the same manner as the wellbred Arab, but be that as" it may, the j Welsh breed are certainly good-look- ; ing animals.
