SHIP PRICES “TOO HIGH”
C.P.R-. CHAIRMAN’S VIEW SOUTHAMPTON, July 20. Sir Edward Beatty, chairman and president of the Canadian Pacific Railway, arrived here to-night from Quebec in the Canadian Pacific liner Empress of Britain, on his annual business visit to England. He said his company was not placing any order for ships at the moment because of the high cost of shipbuilding construction. He added: “We have orders to place for five ships for the CanadianAuslralian service, in which the C.P.R. is interested, and three for our own company—two for the Pacific service and one to replace the Empress of Australia. “These contracts altogether would amount to about £12,000,000.
