SUGAR DEMAND

AMPLE STOCKS HELD NORMAL BUYING URGED NO RISE IN PRICES CONTROLLER’S ADVICE (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, this day. Ample supplies of sugar are held in New Zealand to meet normal demands, according to a statement issued yesterday by the sugar controller, Mr. L. B. Dallard. Householders arc recommended to buv in the normal way and in normal quantities as the prices will not at present rise for normal quantities. “As was pointed out by the Minister of Industries and Commerce, the Hon. D. G. Sullivan,” said Mr. Dallard, “there are ample supplies to meet normal demands, and there is no necessity to make abnormal purchases. For some time past the Government has keDt in close touch with the Colonial Sugar Refining'Company at Auckland and reesrve stocks have been built up so that at present there : s sufficient raw and refined sugar in New Zealand to meet normal vequir.enents for some considerable time. “It is quite possible that some people may be a littio apprehensive that, sugar prices may rise, and therefore think it advisable to lay in extra '.applies. I wish, however, to make ’t quite clear at this stage that the main reason for instituting control at this juncture was to ensure stability of price and supply. The consuming public, therefore, need have no anxiety in the matter of an immediate rise in price ns no increase is contemplated. Prices of all foodstuffs are subject to strict control by the Government.

“I wish, therefore, to impress upon the generaL public that there is no advantage at all to be gained from buying excess supplies of sugar._ Such action is unnecessary and may indeed be harmful as a sudden abnormal demand may quite easily dislocate ordinary arrangements for regular supplies and cause a temporary short.igp in some districts. “Purchasers of sugar can best serve their own interests and those of the country by purchasing their sugar requirements in the normal way and in normal quantities.”
