NEWS OF THE DAY

Supreme Court Session The quarterly session iof the Supreme Court will open in Gisborne on Tuesday, Mr. Justice Johnson presiding. The session promises to be a short one, as there is only one criminal trial set down, and the list of civil claims and miscellaneous business is not heavy. After the completion of the Gisborne session, Mr. Justice Johnson will return to Napier to complete unfinished business there.

Remand Granted

R Phillips, with intent to commit 'a crime, and was remanded, on the application of the police, until August 16. Bail was allowed .in the sum of £IOO, with one surety of a similar amount. While in training for the second defence of the (New Zealand amateur welterweight title which he first won in 1937, the Gisborne 'boxer, Darcy Heeney, suffered a severe eye injury while sparring during the week. Heeney was having a work-out with the well-known professional fighter, Clarrie ■Marshall, and received a -bad gash over one eye when he bumped his face on the crown of his opponent’s head. The wound was deep enough to necessitate stitches and the boxer has been compelled to curtail his training for a short while to allow the injury to heal. This year the national amateur championships will (be held in Invefcargill on 'September 12, 13 and 14. Heeney and T. (Baty, Patutahi, who made a splendid debut in championship class last season, will be the Poverty Bay team.

Another Auckland Team Visits to Gisborne are apparently something of a treat to club Rugby teams in Auckland. Earlier in the present season the Suburbs third grade team applied for and was given a fixture in Gisborne, (being scheduled to play the Poverty Bay third grade representatives on September 9. Now another club, Northcote juniors, is anxious to play a game in Gisborne and has written to the Poverty Bay Rugby Union. seeking a match here and suggesting a provisional date. The offer of the 'Northcote team, which finished second in the junior grade championship series in Auckland, has been accepted and will be discussed by members of the Poverty Bay union at the weekly meeting ,to be held on Monday night. A point which reflects great credit on both the Suburbs and Northcote teams is that both clubs are bearing all the expenses of the visits themselves.
