CYCLING NINE RIDERS TOOK PART IN KAROROKUMARA ROAD RACE
The Greymouth Cycling Club’s 28mile road race from Karoro to Kumara and return last week-end at-
tracted a field of nine, the smallest since the beginning of the season. E. Magiugan, the club’s heading
cyclist, was not able to take part owing to illness. In the course of the race, at Kumara Junction (nine miles), the leading bunch consisted of five riders from the smin and 6min marks, R. Kartell, J. O’Neil, D. Clarke, jun., J. Shaw, and N. Smith. They were followed by H. Pratt, riding solo, a minute and a half behind the leaders. J. Ramsden, off the 3min mark, was dropped by Pratt at Camerons, and was only 30 seconds ahead of the back-markers, Clarke and Arm-
strong, on reaching the Junction. At Kumara racecourse, on the homeward leg, Pratt had joined the leading bunch. The back-markers, .Armstrong and Clarke, sen., were 30 seconds behind. On reaching Kumara Junction (19 miles), Clarke, jun., and Shaw were dropped from the leading bunch, and Clarke, sen., ! had retired with a puncture. Armstrong was riding solo one minute behind the leaders, Kartell, O’Neil, and' Pratt. > At the finish O’Neil crossed the line two lengths clear of H. Pratt, I with R. Kartell finishing one minute later in third place. G. Armstrong, who lost nearly two minutes on the leaders from Kumara Junction, narrowly gained the fastest time of Ihr Bmin. i D. Clarke, sen., E.
