Hole In One Ever holed in one? There’s nothing to it, according to .Jim East,_ an amateur golfer of San Diego, California. He’s scored 120, the last one in July. Most of them happened on the short 18-hole Presidio course at San Diego, where the distances range from 65 to 125 yards. He, however, sank seven on full-sized courses, the longest at 190 yards. His favourite club is an old-time jigger with which he has attained uncanny accuracy. Oh, yes; Jim East is 81 and started to play golf when only 40.
Rags Beat Riches < An American sports writer summed up the recent Sam Urzetta —Frank Stranahan U.S. amateur golf championship final as “an unemployed millionaire versus a job-hunting collegian.” Urzetta won. Stranahan is heir to the Champion sparkplug millions, and does little but play golf, mainly against professionals. “Cinderella Sam,” as Urzetta has become known, is the son of a Rochester, Italian-American janitor. He is an out-of-work college boy who also is in national class as a basketbailer.
“Strike Hard And Fast” The men of the Mackenzie Country are tough.. They speak in a tough language. Note the wording of a telegram sent by the Mackenzie Rugby Sub-union to its “Mick” Casey, the South Canterbury hooker, before the Ranfurly Shield match against Wairarapa. “Strike hard, and strike fast, and don’t bring home any prisoners.” This was regarded by the team as the best of a bunch of messages. which helped to ; put its members in good fettle for the big game. .
