Doubt whether schools play any significant part in spreading infantile paralysis in New Zealand is expressed in the annual report of the Health Department, presented to the House of Representatives yesterday. The general opinion of medical officers of health according to the report is that the opening or closing of ■schools during the most recent outbreak did not affect the course of the epidemic. The Director of the Division of Public Hygiene (Dr F. S Mac Lean) says that in one district, a diligent inquiry failed to prove any association between cases through a school. In this instance a child remained at school during an attack of the disease, which was recognised only later, when some degree of paralysis became evident. No other case occurred in the school.— (P.A.)
