CRICKET West Indies’ Good Opening In Test Against England

LONDON, August 12.—Centuries by Rae and Worrell put the West Indies in a strong position against England in the fourth and final test at the Oval today. At stumps the West Indies had scored 295 for three wickets.

With the comforting knowledge that a draw would enable them to •win the series, the West Indies took no chances. Conditions were all in favour of the batsmen, but the opening pair, A. V. Rae and J. B. Stollmeyer, batted cautiously and their partnership of 72 took 100 minutes. Trever Bailey signalled his return to the England side by getting Stollmeyer leg before wicket, but the wicket did not fall until, tea when Rae, who had completed his second test century, tried a big hit and was bowled by A. V. Bedser. F. M. Worrell, before scoring, had a lucky escape. Rae played a ball gently towards square leg and ran. R. T. Simpson, sensing a possible runout, became too anxious, and his throw was a little wild. The wicketkeeper, A. V. Mclntyre, had to leap high to gather the ball and the chance was lost. At 69 Worrell was dropped by the English captain, F. R. Brown. Worrell completed his second successive test century in 215 minutes. Although meeting with.little success, England’s bowling was far from disappointing. D. V. Wright bowled with unusual accuracy in both length and direction, and was mastered by none of the batsmen. M. Hilton fitted in well as the left-arm slow bowled, and was able to keep the runs down, and Bedser was consistently good. Scores: — WEST INDIES First Innings A. V. Rae, b Bedser 109 J. B.
