M.P. WITHDRAWS A QUESTION

WELLINGTON, This Day (P.A.)— In the House of Representatives today, Mr T. H. McCombs (Opposition, Lyttelton), asked the Prime Minister whether, in order to avoid unncessary expenditure of taxpayers’ money, he would arrange for a medical examination before the appointment of all future Legislative Councillors.” “Without this precaution the Government has found it necessary to announce 31 appointments to out-vote 17 Labour members because of sickness among members,” added Mr McCombs in a note to his question. The question drew a protest from the Prime Minister, who asked if the question was not trifling with the House. He though that the question could contain a reference io a deceased legislator and, indeed, could refer to the fact that one councillor had just undergone a “very major operation.” He suggested that the questiQn might be withdrawn. * Mr McCombs agreed.
