WIFE DEMES THAT HUSBAND KNIFED HER DELIBERATELY
DUNEDIN, This Day (P.A.).— Charged with assaulting his wife with a breadknife, Ernest Edward Langston, aged 47, a fur worker, was today committed to the Supreme Court for trial by Mr J. D. Willis S.M. It was stated that Mrs Langston, the mother of eight children, was admitted to hospital on the night of July 19 with a knife wound in her throat. In evidence, she said that Langston had come home so intoxicated that he did not realise what he was doing. Langston, who was holding a breadknife in his hand, stumbled on the mat and lost his balance and she blamed the mishap on this. When a statement made by her to the police was produced, Mrs Langston said she did not realise what she was saying. According to this statement, Langston said to her “I will kill you” and subsequently, that he would tell the police that she “ran into the knife.” In reply to the Magistrate, Mrs Langston said she was aware of the punishment for perjury.
