ASSOCIATION FOOTBALL RUNANGA NARROWLY DEFEATED IN CHATHAM CUP MATCH

Though the score was even at the call of time, Runanga was considered unlucky to be beaten by Technical (Christchurch) by four goals to three after two extra periods of 15 minutes had been played in the district final of the Chatham Cup Association football competition at Runanga on Saturday afternoon. The ground was not favourable to good football, but both teams turned on an entertaining display. The teams were: —

Technical: McKenzie; Harris, Dean; Cook, King, Smith; Goldsmith, Lucas, Bailey, O’Malley, Maclennan. Runanga: Perrin; Boote, Clark; McMonagle, Armstrong, P. Hassan; White, Glen, Scott, B. Hassan, R. Curragh. Technical opened the scoring when Maclennan, after 10 minutes’ play, cross-kicked to Bailey, who centred for O’Malley to score. Runanga was unlucky not to equalise the score when the visitors’ goalie, McKenzie, was drawn but Smith made a brilliant save. Continued pressure by Runanga, however, resulted in Glen goaling. The second spell was well under way when Maclennan made full use of an opportunity made for him by O’Malley. Scott, for Runanga, netted just before, time. Bailey gave Technical an early lead when he headed a neat goal in the first period of extra time but Scott goaled for Runanga from a corner to make the score three-all. Lucas got in the deciding goal in the final stages of the second period to give Technical the game by four goals to three.
