Sedgman’s Tennis Win
In the quarter-finals of the men’s singles in the London tennis championships at the Queen’s Club, the Australian champion, Frank Sedgman, had a good win over the American, Victor Seixas. This tournament is regarded as a good pointer to the prospects at the Wimbledon chain-; pionships, which begin next week. Results of the quarter-finals in the men’s singles were:—Sedgman beat Seixas, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3; John Bromwich beat Tony Trabert (America), 6-4, 6-4; Eric Sturgess (South Africa) beat Ken McGregor' (Australia), 6-3, 6-2; A. Larsen (America) beat I. Dorfman (America), 6-2, 6-0. —London, June 22.
Aliens In U.S. Army„ The United States House of Representatives today passed a Bill to permit the Army to recruit up to 2500 aliens abroad. The recruits, after five years’ good service, could apply for United States citizenship without waiting their turn under the immigration quota system. Some .opponents of the Bill said that recruits, in the event of war, would be used as spies. Mr Dewey Short' (Republican, Missouri) said: “Let us be . honest. This is a dirty business. I ■ ' ' » U.S. Planes In Britain It is expected that the United States Air - Force will send several squadrons of the latest American jet fighters to Britain, where they will support the American heavy, bomber squadrons already based there. The first of the American jet fighter units is expected to arrive in England in two or three months’ time.—London, June 22.
