Even Field To Contest Ashburton Race

Recent form is represented in the one-mile Maronan Handicap, the principal race at the Ashburton County Racing Club’s meeting, to be held tomorrow, and the winner may be hard to select. A good galloper in Tranbycroft has a double win at Westport last month to recommend his chances, but now that Balkis is coming back to order she may return to the winning list. She will not be able to afford to stay on the mark in this field, however.

Like Balkis, Personality showed an overdue return to form at Winga-

tui, when he finished strongly from the bunch for third behind Trench Fray and Orthodox. This effort brings him strongly into consideration for tomorrow. Good Effort Saieda’s effort for third at Oamaru last week following a win was good, while Trident won many friends by the easy victory last Saturday. Disturbance was a good winner over seven furlongs at Amberley last month and is not unduly overweighted with 7.13. Sir Abbot was an expensive failure when favourite last week, but Boost’s miss at South Canterbury cannot be held against him, as he was left without a chance when the barrier rose. Tlis win in the G. B. Starky Memorial Handicap at Amberley in May was good, and with 7.7 Boost should make his presence felt in his first open race. Bren Gun and Faultrosa finished on well in their recent engagements, but Flying Fort will have to show improvement on his latest form to be worthy of speculation. Prince Defaulter and Open Range are not without chances, but the lightweight horses all seem to, be held by Tranbycroft, who, if he does it right tomorrow, should return first to the birdcage.

The Maronan Handicap is the second leg of the double, the first being the Mayfield Hack Handicap, and! here the dominating candidate is; Cogitation, a good winner at Oamaru who spoiled his prospects in his pre-! vious races by being slow away. Last away at Amberley she* was a good third to Boost and she is not without a chance tomorrow. Zar-I con is due for a winning turn, with' a recent winner at long odds in Mightgo not without prospects.
