Ocean Yacht Race Ends
The Bolero, owned and skippered by John Nicholas Brown of Providence Rhode Island, was the first yacht to cross the finishing line today in the race from Newport to Bermuda. The Escapade was next, followed by the Kittyhawk and the Baruna. However, the Baruna’s corrected time was better than that made by the Kittyhawk. The Bolero won the prize for the first yacht to finish, but it is too early to decide whether she was the winner of the handicap race on a corrected time basis. The Bolero’s corrected time was 75 hours 6 minutes 22 seconds. The Escapade’s corrected time was 77 hours 22 minutes 31 reconds. Other times were: Kittyhawk 78hrs 56min 7sec and Baruna 78hrs 37min 53sec. The Bolero averaged 8.41 knots. The previous fastest average for the race was 8.77 knots established' by the Highland Light in 1932.—Hamilton, Bermuda, June 21.
Experienced Boxer Jackie Hughes, a former English professional boxer now under Archie Leckie’s charge, has been matched to fight Phil Wallace, of Auckland, in Dunedin on June 26. Hughes has had 60 fights, including '2O professional bouts, but has not been in action for the last two years. As an amateur, Hughes won the Bst championship of Great Britain in 1942, and the following year the 9st title. In professional ranks he claims a knock-out win over P. Burgin, Eire champion, and a points decision over Marcel Ludovina of France. He dropped a decision to John Boyd, who has beaten Dick Turpin.
