TRUMAN SAYS U.S. CANNOT AFFORD BIGGER AIR FORCE
WASHINGTON, June 22 (Rec. 11 a.m.). —President Truman today declared that the United States could ■not afford a 70-group air force. He said he was opposed to an air force for which the nation could not pay. Mr Truman has ordered the air force to be kept down to its present strength of 48 groups. The Congressional drafting . committee has agreed on a Bill authorising 70 groups as a ceiling. However, the actual size of the air force eventually will depend on the amount of money voted by Congress. A group varies with the types of plane, ranging from 30 bombers to 75 fighters.
