BEST COAST BOXERS MATCHED AT NELSON CREEK TOURNAMENT
The chances of a capable West Coast boxing team being produced for the New Zealand championships to be held this year at Greymouth may be assessed on Saturday night, when the Nelson Creek Club will hold a tournament. All of the leading provincial boxers have been matched, and some will have a test in meeting visiting boxers. Much interest will centre m the Dunedin team, for the veteran trainer, Archie Leckie, rarely travels unless his pupils are of the right calibre. W. McCoombs, Otago middleweight champion, is reputed to be a clever boxer, with a hard right-hand punch in addition to a fast straight left. It will be interesting to see if he can handle the durable Mel Ord. Less than scientific, Ord has stamina, strength and the will to win. Parkinson, of Dunedin, has the reputation of being an up and coming boy. He will meet B. Eder, who should supply the acid test. Eder fights well when fresh and his experience will be an asset. This should be a first class contest. W. Leckie, also of Dunedin, will face C. Curtis, who is a solid, improving boy. . Curtis is a fast, hard puncher. Vern Tuck is shaping very well in his training sessions and should outpoint J. McMahon, of Christchurch. Tuck has a lot of ability and a good variety of punches. Johnnie Wilson, of Reefton, is one of the most improved boys on the West Coast. He is fast, hits hard, has good feet, and may carry too many guns for T. Dillon, of Blackball. Graham Finlay, of Greymouth, will meet Denny McFadgyn. This pair staged a good fight in Blackball last year, with Finlay having the “edge” on his opponent. It ..is claimed that Finlay has shown vast improvement in recent weeks and if McFadgyn has made the necessary progress a great bout should result. Norman Ross is coming up from South Westland with the Nolan brothers. They will not lack tuition and determination will make up somewhat for their lack of experience.
Although he was defeated at Cobden by a much more experienced opponent, R. Dalgleish showed definite promise. His defence was excellent and he did not lack determination. He has a chance to show his true worth, at Nelson Creek. A heavyweight contest alw-ays attracts interest and hard-hitting T. 'jolly, of Nelson Creek, will try to keep his record clean when he meets S. Lewis, of Reefton. Each will have plenty of supporters.
