Yesterday, when the King’s Birthday holiday was observed, Sydney received 3.39 in of rain and all holiday fixtures, except the League test and some Rugby Union games, were washed out. Rain, which is still falling over most of the State, has flooded thousands of acres of rich farm land. Eastwards from Nowra and Berry to the sea about 150 dairy farms, totalling 10,000 acres, are covered with water, ranging from a few inches to five feet deep. At Forbes 200 miles inland, the Lachlan river floodwaters have begun to recede, but there is a promise of a return to full flood conditions. Ninety miles downstream families are hastily evacuating their homes as the vast expanse of water moves slowly towards the coast. In the path of the flood is the Condobolin, where the police have moved 100 Aborigines from the riverside. Lake Cowal, which is normally dry, now covers an area of 60 square miles and 20,000 cattle have been moved from the vicinity. The township of Euabalong, 30 miles downstream, is provisioning against being entirely isolated within three days.
