The “total consumption of tobacco, all kinds,” is recorded as: 1938, 6 164,0001 b: 1945, 6,655,0001 b; 1946,* 8^099,0001b; 1947; 9,589,0001 b; 1948, 8,784,0001 b. “Consumption of tobacco per head of population” is given as: 1938, 3 8411 b; 1945, 3.931 b; 1946, 4.601 b; 1947, 5.321b;’1948,4.771 b. . ... The total Customs and excise duty naid on tobacco has been: 1938, £2 194 000; 1945, £4,909,000; 1946, £5’888,000; 194'7, £7,120,000; 1948, £6,538,000. • . ■ ■ , • “The 1947 figures for tobacco which was in short supply'during the later war years, is. probably an over-state-ment of actual• consumption. in'l947, the Abstract.states,, “because it, is likely that there was some buildmgup of retail stocks in that year.”
