HIGHLAND KILT WINS STAKES AT ADDINGTON

CHRISTCHURCH, This Day (0.C.).— Highland Kilt lived up to his high reputation when he won the New Zealand Trotting Stakes, the’ second race on the Metropolitan Trotting Club’s second day programme at Addington today. Highland Kilt prevailed in a splendid finish, after he had led the field throughout the mile and a-half. Precaution, one of the favoured division, lost all chance at the start and Sylvette, Correction and Eily Scarlet were soon out of the contest. When the field got under way Highland Kilt was leading Fourth Brigade, Calamity Jane being two lengths back ahead of King Pin and Indomitable, with a gap of 10 lengths to Braemarnie.

There was not much change in the running when the field came past the stands with six furlongs left to cover, Highland Kilt, trotting smoothly, holding a length advantage from Calamity- Jane and Fourth Brigade, King Pin and Indomitable. Calamity Jane was right up on Highland Kilt’s outer racing down the back, Fourth Brigade being a length back racing on the inside of King Pin, and Indomitable also being within striking distance.

Highland Kilt did not look likely to surrender the lead in the last furlong, winning by nearly a length from Fourth Brigade, who finished solidly. Calamity Jane showed improvement to stay on for a useful third placing, just shading King Pin.

Perpetua Wins Well

Racing into the lead with over a .mile to cover, the well-supported Perpetua won the Papanui Handicap in dashing style from Worthy Ace, who had none the best of the running. Scott Wrack, Joygiver, and Hilda Scott were among those slow to get on the journey, and Perpetua soon displaced Vigilant and Farnborough in the lead, with Goldsmith, Aqua Lady, and Merrymaker the most prominent of the remainder. Worthy Ace made a smart move at the halfmile from well back to trail Perpetua, Aqua Lady, Vigilant, and Demetrius.

Perpetua staved off all challenges rather comfortably over the last two furlongs to win by a length from Worthy Ace and Air Mail, both of whom were going strongly at the finish. Aqua Lady was beaten into fourth place in a photo finish with Air Mail. Vedette completed a double for the meeting when he won the Plains Handicap. It was a splendid performance and Vedette never left the issue in doubt over the last half-mile. After Nebula had set the pace for over a mile and a-half Vedette paced into the lead from Nebula, Parawa Derby, Proprietor, Ikaroa and Mobile Globe, who was in a bad position. Vedette piloted the field into the straight and he ran on strongly to win convincingly from Mobile Globe (finishing fast) and Parawa Derby. The weather was fine and the track fast.
