DEPARTMENT STORE RUN BY CUSTOMERS

(BRUSSELS/.—Because )the directors of one of Brussels larger department stores are convinced that the customer is always right, 12 women and four men are now holding regular weekly meetings around a green baize topped table in the heart of the Belgian capital. Picked at random from shoppers in the store, they form a recently constituted “Buyers’ Committee.” Representative of a cross-section of the community, members of the committee are replaced at monthly intervals. They dictate to the store directors and decide just what the customer mqst have. After a recent meeting, directions were sent to store buyers telling them to bring in a stock of a certain line of women’s underwear.

The hardware department was brought down from the fifth floor to the basement adjacent to the food department. According to store directors the “Buyers’ Committee” has proved its worth. Sales have risen by 10 per cent since it was instituted.—Reuter.
