SPORTING DESPATCH MAY WIN CUP RACE AT NEW BRIGHTON

One of the most progressive clubs in the Dominion, the New Brighton Trotting Club has received excellent support for its meeting on Saturday. Feature event on the card is the New Brighton Cup, of £l3OO, which has attracted a handy-sized and good-class field. In this event two horses dominate early discussions, Despatch and Mobile Globe. Despatch, trained at New Brighton, has always raced well on the' seaside course, and his unlucky run of placings may end on Saturday. /Mobile Globe’s good record over the longer distances will also ensure him of heavy support on Saturday.

Despatch has run some good races this season. His stamina is not in doubt and a glance through his record this season shows that he has been more at home on the big grass track at New Brighton. At his last start on this course Despatch received all the worst of the running, finishing with a grand run in third place to Zulu and Ikaroa. Going back to September on the same course, he was second to Premier Royal over two miles in the Mace Memorial, running the two miles in 4.23 4-5. Mobile Globe was a winner «at New Brighton in December, beating Lady Mavourneen over a mile and a half in 3.15 3-5. Mobile Globe has notched three wins in his last four starts, and the Springfield Globe gelding has been registering fast times for trainer C. M. Laing.

Foreign Rady has not been racing quite up to expectations, but may be better suited by the grass track, while further back in the handicaps are two sound stayers in Direct Heir and Prince Hall. Direct Heir, a freelegged pacer, has a torrent of speed, although he is inclined to make mistakes in his races. Prince Hall perhaps is the better proposition, as he is a very solid stayer.

Te Arawhata Te Arawhata has had a number ol setbacks in recent starts and the Methven-trained pacer seems to be reacty for a winning effort. On Saturday at New Brighton he will contest the Burwood Handicap, and if he leaves the mark smoothly should earn some of the' stake. An aged gelding by Sandydale, staying is his forte.

Parawa Derby Parawa Derby lias- established his light to a place as one of the best in his class. Since being transferred from Southland to Addington, the Dillon Hah gelding has built up a splendid record, having being placed in his last four starts. Last Saturday at Addington Parawa Derby made- short work of a strong field and his winning run has not ended. He is a candidate lor the Eclipse Handicap at New Brighton. Well-earned Reward

The win of Valley Gold in the chiei event at Greymouth last Saturday was a well-earned reward after a number of useful efforts. It was his third success Lliis season and he looks on the way to better deeds, possibly at Hokitika on Saturday and later at the Winsatui meeting the following Saturday/ The half-brother to Gold Script may find Terminate the hardest to beat at Hokitika. Fabric Silk

W. R. Butt’s team of horses have been racing in good style and the Templeton trainer will have a solid candidate in Fabric Silk, who will be driven by J. A. Carmichael, in the main events at the Auckland trots on Saturday. This Royal Silk pacer appears to have better chances in the Fapakura Handicap over a mile and a quarter.

Wee Mac ' Wee Mac suffered an attack Oi bleeding in the main race at Omoto last Monday and this no doubt accounted for his poor effort. He was a 'staunch favourite on both machines.

Melite Melite ' , ot her tongue over the bit in the second division of the Railway Hack Handicap and in the circumstances did well to hold on for second place behind Philmarch. It was a good effort by the Neptune mare Melite, who is from Brunbiid, a very line sprinter her day. Melite should soon pick “up a stake.

Hem isphere Hemisphere appears one of the brightest prospects in sight among the improvers’ classes and what beats him at Epsom on Saturday should win. Owned and trained by V. Learning, lhe Springfield Globe gelding has had two firsts and two second placings in his last four starts, running second to the brilliant Victory Song at Forbury Park in his last start. At the Auckland meeting on Saturday he is entered for both the Wairakei Handicap and the Massev Memorial Challenge Stakes. He is particularly well placed in the stakes event.

J. Young’s Trotter J. Young will parade the square trotter Sure Charge at the Auckland trots cn Saturday. The Light Brigade gelding gave a taste of his ability by winning a double at Victoria Park last month, and he then went on to score convincingly at the Timaru trots in

the same month. He is one of the best young trotters in commission.

Not Disgraced Golden Spa was not disgraced in defeat in the Jackson Stakes at Wanganui. He took the trail from Aquelio lor three furlongs, but then went to the front and made all the pace. He held on gamely in the straight, and it was only in the last few yards that Voltaic got the upper hand. Although Golden Spa may not be up to the best of his age, he has more than average ability and more should be heard of him before the season closes. Back To Form The veteran Barrage ran his best race this season in the Earle Stakes at Wanganui, finishing a good fourth. He was in the middle of the field to the five furlongs, where he commenced a run which took him almost to the leaders. He challenged at the furlong, but weakened slightly in the final stages. He may have been harder to beat if his run had been reserved a little longer. Barrage’s performance indicated that he is not yet a spent force, and he may be capable of regaining the winning list before the tracks become too soft. He is engaged at Rangitikei on Saturday. Smart Trotter Dictation won from 4.47 at Addington in 4.26 2-5.. In the tighter class Ripcord, from 4.42, took 4.26 2-5. In the Wigram Handicap, Parawa Derby from 3.40 won in 3.27 2-5; in the main event Zulu from 3.34 took 3.28 2-5. Swanee Retired Swanee, winner of the Auckland Cup, has run her last race. Bought by Mr D. H. Blackie for 800gns as a yearling, she has won £17,380.
